Roundworms:  Worm

Common in:  Puppies and kittens.

Can also be found in: Dogs and cats.

Diagnosis: Microscopic fecal exam; Visible in stool or vomit.

Treatment: oral medication given at 2-week intervals.  

Possible Symptoms: none; vomiting; diarrhea; abdominal swelling.  

Possible Transmission: To adult dogs and cats: infected feces contaminating the yard.  

Lifestyle Prevention: Isolate your pet from infected feces of other animals.  

Medical Prevention: For dogs: heartworm preventatives.  

Zoonotic Transmission: Rare; young children can develop "visceral larval migrans" by eating dirt contaminated with feces.
