Whipworms: Worm
Common in: Dogs.
Diagnosis: Microscopic fecal exam.
Treatment: Oral medication or injection, given at 3-week intervals, depending on the severity of the infection; hospitalization for treatment of dehydration, malnutrition, and infection.
Possible Symptoms: None; severe watery diarrhea; vomiting; marked weight loss.
Possible Transmission: Ingestion of Whipworm eggs; infected feces contaminating the yard.
Lifestyle Prevention: Isolate your pet from infected feces of other animals.
Zoonotic Transmission: Unlikely.
